About Guide

Welcome to Japow Tours

Paul Vanderheiden has been Snowboarding for most of his life and has a deep passion for the winters. He learned to ride in an unlikely place, Flagstaff Arizona at the Arizona Snowbowl. It is a small ski hill that has endless off trail and hiking accessibility that most ski-goers don't think about. Hiking to untouched powder lines for the first time, Paul knew he was hooked for life.  The San Francisco Peaks, which sits on the Colorado Plateau is where he first learned about the dangers in the snowpack by taking College courses in Backcountry & Avalanche Safety. Once finished with College at Northern Arizona University, Paul and his soon to be wife Meghan fled to South Lake Tahoe to pursue the dream of riding powder. After years of working at Oakley & Burton Snowboards, Paul is getting back to his roots and pursuing his dreams of guiding to ride. This is what snowboarding is all about, "riding untouched pow lines with a few close friends." The rest is history and the two currently reside in Misawa, Japan with their newborn son chasing the storms together around Northern Japan.
